Art at the Heart of the RUH

A talk by Hetty Dupays, Art Programme Manager at the Royal United Hospital, Bath

24 Feb; 7:30pm

Hetty Dupays will give an overview of the arts programme and activity at the RUH.

It is recognized that the arts have a key role to play in delivering an improved patient environment and experience. Our aim is to benefit all users of the hospital with specific programmes designed for those with particular needs, such as elderly or very young patients. We have a temporary and permanent exhibitions programme that showcases local amateur and professional artists and groups, schools, universities, RUH patients and staff, who all find it rewarding to showcase their artwork, sometimes for the first time, in a public space. We offer a programme of lunchtime music performance in the hospital Atrium with further ward-based sessions on the Older People's Unit. We also schedule regular creative projects for young patients on the Children's Ward.

An Emporium of Delights - The Deliberate Mistaek

A talk by Mikey Please

THIS TALK IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.

17 Mar; 7:30pm

A talk looking at the use of the deliberate mistake in the animation process. By injecting a flaw into a film, the audience becomes involved with the process. The result of this is to bridge the gap between producer and spectator.

Mikey is a freelance filmmaker and animator based in London, and a recent MA graduate from Royal College of Art. BAFTA have described him as ‘a director to watch out for'. Dazed and Confused recently called him ‘the hottest name in animation'. His first film, a collaboration with Ben Gelis, a stage and set designer, was the first film ever to be purchased by the University of London Arts for their permanent collection. The Eagleman Stag is currently receiving much acclaim at film festivals around the world.

Drawing the Holburne Museum of Art

A talk by Karen Wallis and Dr Alexander Sturgis

30 Jun; 7:30pm

Karen Wallis has been Artist in Residence throughout the Holburne Museum's development project.  For this talk, Dr Alexander Sturgis, Director of the Holburne Museum, will be in conversation with Karen, discussing what part the residency played in the project and its impact on her as an artist.

When the museum closed in April 2008, Karen began drawing anything that caught her eye.   She has followed the whole project from packing up the collection and moving out, through the building of the new extension and restoration of the existing building, the fund raising and planning meetings, up to the new installations of exhibits for the reopening in May this year.

What began as a series of sketchbooks of the building, has grown to include portraits of the people on site and larger drawings about some of the stories that emerged during the process. An exhibition of Karen's drawings can be seen at the Holburne Museum from May 14 until September 4, 2011, and the complete sketchbooks and site portraits are online atwww.karenwallis.co.uk/holburne
