The exhibition will be at the Bath Royal Literary & Science Institute
and stresses the link between art and science. Alteration, transformation and
variation are the theme of the Group ForNow. This group was founded by
post graduates of the School of Art & Design, Bath to exercise critical thinking
along the working practice‘BAS’ website artist statement
Margaret is a painter and installation artist and the work that she makes has developed from her interest in Japanese pattern construction. A key influence on her style of painting are the designs on patterned origami papers and kimono fabrics, which randomly mix organic shapes, floral motifs and abstract patterns to create a timeless riot of colour and form.
These organic shapes and abstract forms are used to build up layers of ornamentation in varying densities and sizes before overlaying this background with the cut-out shapes of people or objects.
Underpinning this subject matter is Margaret’s interest in people, their interactions and the quality of their inner life, which for the most part is hidden from view. In appropriating these designs from their normal setting of fabric decoration and placing them in a new context Margaret transforms their meaning. In this context the use of organic shapes and abstract forms signifies, to her, the beauty and mystery of the human psyche.
