Ian Hunter

Flatness and depth within the context of abstraction is my chief preoccupation in painting; the way in which artists have played with the idea of surface and the implication of depth (or the absence of it). I am interested in how a painter can subvert and disrupt the picture plane and delight in the incongruities that can occur.
No doubt this interest is reinforced by many periods when I am actively engaged in making 3D pieces. The discipline of craft processes and the emphasis on the physical surface have left their mark.
