Felicity Roma Bowers

My work is often about a nightworld, which is not always dark. It is the time when the daily busy-ness of the rational mind begins to subside; when dreams, daydreams and fantasies can begin to surface. As we begin to relax and let go of our hold on the world of work and survival, all those elements which have no practical use or purpose come forward to claim their space. This can happen at any time - the middle of the afternoon, at sunrise or at midnight.
The invisible becomes visible through paper, paints and crayons. I work mainly in mixed media, watercolour, monoprint, linocuts and etchings. I also sometimes make collages and assemblages of found objects. The medium is the means to an end - whatever works to convey the atmosphere I'm seeking to capture. But also the qualities of each material used are enjoyed and celebrated. The element of chance is the secret ingredient! Paints and inks are allowed to develop in their own characteristic ways.
My intention is to create images that are atmospheric and full enough of content to be lived with over time. The surfaces contain rich colours and textures in many layers to maintain the eye’s interest. The imagery contains metaphorical, allusive layers of meaning. My images are figurative and narrative, but not literal. By using archetypal images I hope to awaken resonances within the viewer. I believe in the power of colour to awaken and allow a range of emotions, in particular I aim to uplift and inspire.
As I originally trained in illustration the storytelling element is bound to make its way into my painting and printmaking, hopefully striking resonances in the individual's psyche. I have been a professional artist, illustrator and teacher for nearly 15 years.
As well as exhibiting in many group or solo shows I have had work published in a wide variety of contexts. I have also been involved with artists' groups such as Bristol Printmakers Workshop, Bath Artist Printmakers, Bath Fringe Festival and currently work at Widcombe Studios in Bath.
