2 talks by Karen Wallis as part of selected & rejected (see gallery section)
8 Oct
Part 1 - Personal Choice
How much freedom do people experience when deciding what art they like? How much does received information influence choice? Can you make a choice in front of the artist? These and other questions will form the basis of the first of two open discussions in the gallery, on issues related to the exhibition. In this part of the retrospective of Karen’s work, members of the public are invited to view and curate their personal selection, by deselecting the exhibits they do not wish to include. Bring your opinions and be prepared to argue.

Part 2 - Institutional Choice
How do artists manage the submission process? What is the institutional point of view? What are people’s perceptions of institutional decisions? The second of two discussions in the gallery, on issues related to the exhibition - in which Karen will be displaying recent work, which has been submitted to various institutions, for exhibitions, competitions, residencies and funding opportunities. Alongside her artworks will be documentation of the submission process, including the selection and rejection result plus any costs incurred. Whichever side you are on, come along and have your say.

Thursday 12th March
Peter Burke has been nominated by Caroline Waterlow to speak about his large-scale sculptural works. In particular he will focus on 'HOST' an investigation into possibility of introducing an element of chance into an industrial process, and studio based works.
Central to my work is the idea of a human presence. I feel we have a predisposition to recognise and read the human form with more intensity than any other visual activity. My current work grew out of a desire to make contact with the Western Figurative Tradition but to use means that reflect my environment and experience.
Peter Burke has exhibited at the New Art Centre, Salisbury; Flowers East, London; The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; Cartwright Hall Bradford; Spectrum Gallery, London; ACA Gallery, Munich; and at art fairs in Madrid, Chicago, Basel, and London.
Large scale installations are at the Cass Foundation, Chichester; Woolwich Arsenal, London; the collection of the late Anita Roddick; the collection of Mr and Mrs Douglas, California; the Dyson Research Establishment; The Berardo Collection, Lisbon.
